What is Civil Engineering?

Posted on November 25, 2021November 25, 2021

Civil engineering plays an important role in society by designing, constructing, managing, and maintaining infrastructure and facilities that we depend on.

🚸Have you ever used a cross walk?
🛣Do you drive your car on the highway?
🚽Are you able to flush your toilet?
🚰Have you turned your water faucet on today?
🏗Have you passed by the construction site for a high-rise?
🏞Do you use your public park?
🚏Can you cross a bridge to get over a river?
🚦Have you stopped at a red light?

Then you have a civil engineer to thank for that! Civil engineering may be one of the least understood fields that we all rely on, but that’s because infrastructure is all around us and we often don’t think about how it got there or who is behind it.

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. It’s one of the oldest engineering disciplines!

Sub-disciplines

Transportation Engineering

The planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of safe and efficient transportation systems.

Structural Engineering

The design, development, testing, construction, and monitoring of man-made structures to ensure safety, stability, and security.

Construction Engineering

The design, planning, construction, and management of infrastructure.

Geotechnical Engineering

The use of soil mechanics and rock mechanics for engineering design and applications.

Water Resources Engineering

The design, management, and study of systems, facilities, and equipment that help manage human water resources.

Environmental Engineering

The application of engineering principles, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems.
